I'll explain briefly for those that
are reading this blog for the first time:
I'm volunteer-working
in Kibera, the largest slum in the world, that's in Nairóbi, the capital of
Kenya. In the first week of work, me and Valéria (a volunteer from Colombia)
visited some schools and we realized that their biggest problem is not having
water. They don't have water for washing the hands, brushing the teeth, cooking
or dinking.
Looking to help these
schools in a sustainable way we created the project "Water for kids in
Kibera", that has the objective of buying the necessary equipment to
collect water from the rain. Thus, these schools will always have free water; they'll
save the money usually spent on water, and they'll be able buy other necessary
things, like food.
The first school
that we are going to help is the "Fruitful Talent Center", which is a
school that needs a lot of help because the 180 students (including 25 orphans)
don't pay because they don't have money (and usually the monthly fee costs 2
USD). The only economic resource that this school has is selling handmade
souvenirs that they do, but most of the times this money is not enough for buy
everything they need.
This school uses
around 1400 litres of water per week. That is, in 3 months (the longest
rainless period in Kenya) they use 16800 litres of water. So we'll buy one tank
with 16000 litres capacity to store water.
We did the budget
of the project and we concluded that we going to need 2229 USD because the tank
alone costs 2000 USD and we'll need the tank, gutters and a structure (made
with cement, sand and stones) to settle it so nobody can steal it. We'll also
need a way to transport these materials and someone to work on the
construction.
We already sent a
formal proposal to some companies that sell tanks, asking for a 50% discount,
but none of them replied until now. I wanted to attach the proposal here on the
blog but it's not possible to attach files on the blog. If some of you want to
read it, I can send it to you by an email or facebook. The proposal explain all
the details about the project and is in english.
Now comes the most
important part of the post: the part where you can help!
Me and Valéria
don't have enough money to implement this project alone, so we are fundraising
on our blogs so that friends, friends of friends, family, people that we don't
know, everybody, can donate any quantity to help this dream come true.
I am very hopeful that the project works out for at least one school, because if this happens, 180 lives will be changed for the better, thanks to us! Whoever can donate any amount, even if it is 10 USD, don't hesitate to do it. And who cannot, remember that you can help by disseminating this post with your friends and spreading the idea.

One of my biggest
friends, Carolina, wants to share my project with her friends and people that
live in USA just like her. We know that an international transaction is expensive
and a lot of people don't know exactly how to do it. So she had the idea to
leave one of her bank accounts empty and you can donate to this bank account.
On February 07th (the last day of fundraising) she'll send me everything that
is in this bank account, at just in one time.
Here is a print of
the budget and a print of her empty bank account. All the money you deposit in
this bank account will go to the project.

I hope we can
accomplish this dream together!
